Folk Art Jobs

folk art jobs
How do I make the leap jump to become self employed as an artist?

I’m already an established folk artist, have a small clientele, and have been featured in a few times in one of the national magazines as one of their top 200 in the country. It is certainly my passion, but I’m affraid to quit my “day job” due to the health benefits and the remaining debt from a divorce. I don’t make that much at my day job, and it really barely pays my bills. Moonlighting my folk art business has allowed me to collect and sell and a little extra money, but now that it has become somewhat successful it seems there are not enough hours in the day, and it is hard to do custom work in the three hours at night and the two weekend days, not to mention charge for it-It’s so hard to charge for your work, so now I’m just doing what I want, but want to do it full time. I have no savings whatsoever-Has anyone been here before with some rock solid advice? Sincerely, One or the Other
It’s actually a folk art painting/antiques business, not the singing variety-Sorrya bout that!

Looks like you’re between a rock and a hard place. From your description, it looks like you’re singing is the key bread winner. To make a leap, you need more exposure. The only way you can do that is to find someone to be your agent and publicize you. You might consider making demos to be played to prospective clubs or theaters. Or make a home video with good sound reproduction that could be shown and heard.
